EP13: The Smiths “The Queen is Dead”

2015thesmiths_thequeenisdead_press_030815-1

It begins with a World War I music hall tune about soldiers longing to return home to Great Britain and ends with Marc Antony consoling Cleopatra about her dress size before the fall of the Roman empire.  In between are ten nearly perfect pop songs that simultaneously harken back to The Smiths Mod roots and anticipates the rise of Britpop a decade later.    We dig deep into Morrissey’s “cleaver depression,” Johnny Marr’s chiming guitars and the slamming rhythm section of Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce and mostly gush.  Mostly.
